All of the water in the world today contains particles.  Whilst this is okay in most circumstances it isn’t safe to drink by humans unless the water is treated.  This is where flocculants and coagulants come in.  Flocculent and coagulant processes are used to separate the particles from the water to make the water safe.

The Process

Although it may sound confusing, the flocculants and coagulants processes are relatively simple, but must be done in a set order.

• Coagulation – the first step in the process is coagulation.  This basically involves placing a coagulant agent into the water to destabilise the charges in the particles.  This enables the particles to stick together and eventually makes them larger.  Although it sounds complicated it really isn’t, and can even be done at home.  The coagulation process must be complete before the next step can occur.
• Flocculation – this step basically continues the particle enlargement stage so that they are big enough to see with the human eye.  Flocculation is basically a slow mixing process which can take anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours.

Once the flocculants and coagulants processes have been completed, it is relatively simple to filter the water to make it clean enough for human consumption.  The processes can be done on your own, but most commonly are done professionally.
